To begin takes courage, not credentials (this, and what I'm calling BS on)
Lessons of Light #33
Listen.
What are you waiting for?
Isn’t it time to begin?
Why are you waiting?
I understand many of the reasons:
“I’m scared.”
“I don’t know how.”
“Who am I do to this?”
“Someone else is more qualified.”
“I just need to learn more about it.”
“I need certifications, degrees.”
“What do I have to say that someone else hasn’t already said.”
“I’m confused.”
“I need to take care of some other things before I can get to this.”
“I don’t have the time.”
“My day gets away from me.”
I’ve felt these, too.
Everyone at some point can relate to this.
But don’t you think it’s time we call BS on this line of thinking? It’s so boring, isn’t it?
Time to Claim Your Thing
It’s time to claim the thing we want to do. Step into it. Say, “This is who I am now. This is what I do.”
Not everyone is going to be on board with you. Can you be okay with that?
Not sure where to start? Figure it out.
Learning Through Doing
I’ve spent hours trying to figure out a tech thing for an online community I’m starting for the people in my 8-session TFT book study. I set it up, sent out the invites, and …
No one was able to post on it. It it wasn’t working.
Past me would be beat myself up about this. It’s not perfect! It’s bad! I sent it out too soon. I’m so embarrassed.
Current me says: figure it out.
So, it’s a little messy right now. Someday it won’t be. Nobody was mad, no one was put out … they were fine to wait while I worked on fixing it.
It’s just like when I started singing many years ago. Listening back to early recordings, wow – was I ever an over-singer. So earnest. So forceful! Yet, after years of singing, of hundreds of performances, of listening back to audio, and taking voice lessons, I now know how to use my voice. And — I like my voice. It’s because I put in the time with it.
But, I had to start somewhere. Busking on the Venice boardwalk, driving hours to play at coffeeshops to play three hours for 50 bucks, recording CDs, traveling across the country in a minivan to play at house concerts, festivals, farmers markets, smokey bars, and anywhere someone said yes to us.
It’s through the doing that we learn. It’s through the doing that we grow, and get better, wiser, more seasoned. But the trick is — we’ve got to push off from that starting line.
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it. Begin it now.” – Goethe
It Comes Down to This…
To begin doesn’t require knowledge or experience.
It requires COURAGE.
It requires the childlike ability to “make believe,” to use our imagination, and to PLAY.
It requires opening the door for the muse to come in. She’s been beckoning us to CREATE.
It requires WILLINGNESS. Faith. Belief in possibilities.
It requires TRUST in simply moving forward even when we can’t clearly see the road or path ahead.
It requires that we CLAIM who we are, starting now.
To begin requires looking complacency straight in the eye and saying, “Not today, you little bully.” Don’t let it trap you. Complacency resists transformation and evolution.
To begin requires humility. It requires us to embrace that we are CO-CREATORS in ALL of this. We are not alone. We don’t have to shoulder it all alone.
The Muse Is Calling
The muse is talking in our ear. (Maybe you call it your spirit guides or angels.)
Is today the day you’ll finally listen?
What are you being called forth to create, say, do, make, try, write, sing, record, start?
So if you were to ask me, “What do I need to do to begin?” It’s really quite simple.
Give yourself permission … and begin.
P.S. For inspo, I highly recommend the book The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It’s a must read for literally everyone, no matter what it is you want to create.
P.P.S. Ready to stop waiting for someday? I’m beginning something new and offering clarity coaching for people with dreams (big or little) who are tired of their own excuses. Whether you’re postponing a creative project, struggling with perfectionism, or at a midpoint wondering “what’s next,” we’ll work together to identify what’s really keeping you stuck, create concrete first steps from overwhelming dreams, and help you embrace the messy start. There’s a spiritual element to this work — connecting you back to your authentic self and the creative force that’s been calling you forward. My clients will walk away moving forward with their ideas — no longer waiting for the perfect time, finally saying yes to themselves.
I offer single breakthrough sessions ($75), 3-session momentum packages ($200), and ongoing monthly check-ins ($60) for sustained accountability. Ready to begin? Hit me up and let me know you’re interested in learning more. (Just reply to this email.)
