21 Rules of the Mind: Every Word We Say Forms a Blueprint in Our Mind
“The most important words you’ll ever hear in your entire life are the words you say to yourself.” — Marisa Peer
Consider this: Every thought we think, and every word we say form a blueprint, and our mind must work to make that blueprint real.
So says Marisa Peer, renowned hypnotherapist, best-selling author, and award-winning speaker. Marisa is known for creating a program called Rapid Transformational Therapy, which is a hybrid of several different therapy techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy and mindfulness. Basically, it helps people reframe negative beliefs, values, habits, and emotions that often are buried in the subconscious.
I first heard about Marisa a few years ago when I watched a video where Marisa gave a speech for an organization called Mindvalley. Her speech was about the rules of the mind – or, in other words, how the mind works.
She says that what is expected tends to be realized. That imagination is more powerful than knowledge when it comes to our minds.
And that every day we have a choice on how we speak to ourselves, but we don’t have a choice on what it does to our body. Like how stress has a negative effect on our bodies.
Marisa believes that our words and thoughts are powerful, and the mind is always listening. So, every word we say and every thought that we think becomes a blueprint that our mind and body work to turn into reality.
She says that the mind does what it thinks we want. That’s it’s job. The mind bases its job on the words we speak and the pictures we put in our head.
So, she suggests that whatever we want, or need to do, we must link MASSIVE pleasure to it. For instance, if you have to talk in front of people but you’re feeling nervous, instead, of saying, “I’m so nervous,” say, “I’m excited to share my message. I’m a powerful speaker. I’m thrilled about this challenge. Everyone is excited to hear what I have to say.”
As Marisa shares, our mind does not know, and it does not care if what we tell it is right or wrong, good or bad, true or false, helpful or unhelpful – it just lets it in. Our mind’s job is to act on the words we tell it.
And so, our job is to give our minds much more powerful, descriptive, and positive words.
Here are Marisa Peer’s 21 Rules of the Mind:
1. Your every thought and word form a blueprint that your mind and body work to make your reality.
2. The strongest force in humans is that we must act in a way that consistently matches our thinking.
3. Every thought you think causes a physical reaction and an emotional response within you.
4. Imagination is more powerful than knowledge when dealing with your own mind or the mind of others.
5. In a battle between emotion and logic, emotion always wins.
6. Your mind always does what it thinks you want it to do.
7. Your mind works to move you from pain to pleasure.
8. Your mind is hardwired to resist what is unfamiliar and to return to what is familiar.
9. Your mind responds to the pictures you construct and the words you tell yourself.
10. Your mind does not care if what you tell it is good, bad, true, false, healthy, unhealthy, or right or wrong, it accepts and acts on your words regardless.
11. You make your beliefs, then your beliefs make you, then the universe makes those beliefs real.
12. What you present to your mind, your mind will present back to you.
13. When dealing with the subconscious mind, the greater the conscious effort, the less the subconscious responds.
14. The mind cannot hold conflicting beliefs or thoughts ... they cancel each other out.
15. Your mind can only work in the present tense.
16. Your mind does not recognize neutral words like don’t, can’t, no, not, later, maybe, tomorrow.
17. Your mind can only respond to words that make pictures, the more vivid the picture, the more powerful the response.
18. Your mind responds better to positive words and to specific detailed dynamic words and instructions.
19. The mind learns by repetition.
20. What is expected tends to be realized.
21. Whatever you focus on, you get more of.
Oh boy – our minds are muscles we need to build and focus on constantly. That is, if we want to create different experiences in our lives. My mind is already churning with pictures of things I want to bring into my reality. How about you? How are you going to talk to yourself today?
Thanks for listening. Keep holding the light.
